Description

The first prophets whose words are recorded in a separate book are Isaiah, Hosea, and Amos. They all began their time as prophets during the reigns of King Uzziah, who also was known by the name of Azariah, of Judah and King Jeroboam the second of Israel. Jeroboam begins his reign in Israel twenty-seven years before Uzziah begins his reign in Judah. This was a time of prosperity for both Judah and Israel. Hosea refers to the end of Jeroboam’s reign as the last of Jehu’s line to reign in Israel and continues his prophesies through the time of King Hezekiah. Amos refers to events that happen towards the end of Uzziah’s reign pronouncing judgment on Syria, Philistia, Phoenicia, and Edom along with Judah and Israel. Isaiah and Hosea continue prophesying through the reigns of Kings Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. The prophet Jonah is also active during this time. What is going on in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah during this time?
