Description

The book of Joel warns about the imminent arrival of the day of the LORD. However, we don’t know when Joel was writing and, so we don’t know exactly what situation in Israel and Judah that Joel was writing about. Joel doesn’t mention any specific ruler or time frame, nor does he mention the empires of Assyria or Babylon. Because of this, some scholars place Joel in the time of King Joash of Judah who ruled under the firm guidance of the High Priest Jehoiada and whose enemies were the nations around Judah. The language and message Joel brings is very similar to that of Zephaniah. Because of this similar theme and tone, other scholars place Joel two hundred years later as a contemporary of Zephaniah. The message Joel brings seems to apply to both time periods and, is perhaps, timeless in its message. What warning does Joel bring to the people of Judah, Israel, and the nations?
