Joel concludes his description of the day of the LORD that is coming on Judah and Jerusalem with a call for the whole nation to repent. They are to sound the shofar as a warning that the day of the LORD is coming and also as a call to gather together to repent. Joel 2:15-17 NKJV 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; 16 Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room. 17 Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'" Joel calls on every segment of the population to repent. Children and babies who were not usually called on to fast were to be included. No age group was to be exempted. The bride and bridegroom who were ordinarily exempted from public duties were to come out of their homes and gather with the rest of the nation in repentance. What would God do in response to this national repentance?
