The prophet Jonah went to the city of Nineveh and declared that God’s judgment was coming on the city. The city repented and changed their ways, so God relented and didn’t not destroy Nineveh. This was during the time of King Jeroboam the second of Israel when Israel was enjoying prosperity and safety. The empire of Assyria with Nineveh as its capital city was not yet a threat to Israel, Judah, and the nations around her. After the death of Jeroboam, Assyria began to expand her borders towards Israel. Within forty years the nation of Israel was taken away into captivity by Assyria. What could stop the expansion of this mighty empire known for its brutality? Around eighty years after the fall of Israel, God raised up Nahum to prophesy against Nineveh and, by extension, the entire empire of Assyria. What was the situation for Judah when Nahum prophesied against Nineveh? What would happen to Nineveh and Assyria? How do we see the coming of Messiah in this book addressed to the Ninevites?
