God chose Obadiah, his servant, to speak to the nation of Edom telling them that judgment was coming on the nation. Edom was the nation founded by Esau. The name Edom, meaning red, came from the incident when Esau sold his birthright. Genesis 25:30-32 NKJV 30 And Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary." Therefore his name was called Edom. 31 But Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright as of this day." 32 And Esau said, "Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?" This event is a turning point for both Esau and Jacob. From its inception, the nation of Edom is linked to Esau’s rejection of the birthright. The nation of Israel, however, is linked to Jacob’s victorious struggle with God and men. Esau’s sale of the birthright influenced all future interactions between the two brothers and the nations that came from them. How does this relationship affect the actions of Edom? How do these actions of Edom bring God’s judgment on them and what is that judgment?
