A Catholic monk

The last video in honor of the life's work of Blessed Robert of Tinn Lake. Our monastery has been compared to Rivendell of Tolkien, the Last Homely Home. And truly it is.

"Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, `a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all'. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness."

  • JRR Tolkien, "The Lord of the Rings"

Quote from JRR Tolkien, "The Hobbit", last chapter after when the dragon Smaug was slain and Bilbo returned home:

"It was on May the First that the two [Gandalf and Bilbo] came back at last to the brink of the valley of Rivendell, where stood the Last (or the First) Homely House. Again it was evening, their ponies were tired, especially the one that carried the baggage; and they all felt in need of rest. As they rode down the steep path, Bilbo heard the elves still singing in the trees, as if they had not stopped since he left; and as soon as their riders came down into the lower glades of the wood they burst into a song of much the same kind as before. This is something like it:

The dragon is withered, His bones are now crumbled; His armour is shivered, His splendour is humbled!

Though sword shall be rusted, And throne and crown perish With strength that men trusted And wealth that they cherish,

Here grass is still growing, And leaves are yet swinging, The white water flowing, And elves are yet singing

Come! Tra-la-la-lally! Come back to the valley!

The stars are far brighter Than gems without measure, The moon is far whiter Than silver in treasure:

The fire is more shining On hearth in the gloaming Than gold won by mining, So why go a-roaming?

O! Tra-la-la-lally Come back to the Valley.

O! Where are you going, So late in returning? The river is flowing, The stars are all burning!

O! Whither so laden, So sad and so dreary? Here elf and elf-maiden Now welcome the weary

With Tra-la-la-lally Come back to the Valley, Tra-la-la-lally Fa-la-la-lally Fa-la!."

"The dragon is withered" for Father Robert won over the Ancient Serpent, the Devil, through his death, embracing the life-giving Cross of Christ. And now, when the Dragon has been trampled down under the feeth of Christ, then "Here grass is still growing, And leaves are yet swinging, The white water flowing, And elves are yet singing..." the life in our monastery continues! So "Come back to the Valley!"

Artists whose pictures have been used in the video: David Wenzel, Tolkien's "Illustrated Hobbit" comic book; Ted Nasmith; JRR Tolkien himself; Marek Kernumees "The Hobbit" in Estonian("Kääbik"); Justin Gerard. Permission has been asked from Gerard and Wenzel to use their illustrations. Ted Nasmith I know not how to contact. Marek Kernumees and JRR Tolkien have reposed and neither do I know who own rights for their pictures, whom to ask. If anyone knows, send me their contacts. As long as no one objects to it, I therefore presume permission to use pictures of artists I have not been able to reach.
