Heavy rain in the last weeks have created giant erosion gullies, some 70 meters deep and 500 meters long, in Brazil’s Maranhao state. According to firefighters, 27 families had to leave the surrounding areas due to the risk of their homes collapsing. Although a recurrent problem in the region, the amount of rain in the last days has aggravated the ‘gully’ phenomenon.
